“…how good it is—rich and layered , with hints of Lemony Snicketish schadenfreude and a generous dollop of Jane Austen-style swipes at small-town pettiness.” --The Atlantic, October 2008
Anne of Green Gables and its sequels were the Harry Potter books of the Edwardian age. They are still wildly popular – especially in Japan! – and have generated a television series and a tourist bonanza for Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). In this lecture, you will meet the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery (the J.K. Rowling of her day) and find out why “the Anne books” thrive 100 years later.
Susan McGough was a lucky child. She had a Mother who read to her and who shared her enthusiasm for books by giving them as a presents. One of those presents was Anne of Green Gables. Since childhood, Susan has reread the Anne series maybe three times and discussed them with others of her generation and younger. She has an interest in literary tourism and, for this lecture, researched P.E.I.’s Anne industry and the life and career of Lucy Maud Montgomery. Susan is an OLLI member and volunteered to give this image-rich lecture.
