Imagine a debate between Erma Bombeck and Martha Stewart. Whom would you root for?
Before there were refrigerator magnets, her columns were taped on millions of Frigidaire doors. Before there was Dave Barry, there was Erma: the mother of all columnists.
Erma Bombeck died in 1996. She remains a best-selling author; her voice still rings true. This class will focus on her life and her place as a world-class humorist. She was always true to her values. Those values, what really mattered to her, bled through each of her widely syndicated columns and wildly popular books. We will look at her writing, her attitudes about being a writer, and what makes Erma so uniquely American.
Susan McGough has always enjoyed humorous writing. Her favorites are two Ohioans: Erma Bombeck (Dayton) and James Thurber (Columbus). Her MA in American Studies is from the University of Hawai’i and she believes that what and who makes America laugh reflects the state of the nation.
