Mountain Lions and Us (10/5) meets at Skyline Ridge. this three-mile circle route involves an elevation gain of 275 feet each way as we climb and descend the ridge. It is one of the most beautiful natural history hikes on Skyline Boulevard with both ocean and valley views. During a one-hour lunch break (at the midway point) your docent will tell you all you ever wanted to know about mountain lions and how to reduce the risk of a serious lion encounter. Keith Johnsgard, after leaving the university classrooms behind, Johnsgard moved to the mountains to re-embrace his boyhood passions. he has gradually reinvented himself as a naturalist, building a new library and walking daily along the ridges. And now, for nearly a decade, he has been leading moving outdoor classrooms as a mountain hike docent. His primary interests and specialties include ehthnobotany, Ohlone culture and history, earthquake geology, mammal tracking and mountain lion behavior.
