The Slumbering Giant (11/8) meets at Los Trancos. The 800-mile long San Andreas Fault is one of the earth's wonders and the Los Trancos Preserve is a little-known local gem. Here you can place one foot on the North American Plate and the other on the Pacific Plate. This is a 2.5-mile leisurely walk with a modest 200-foot elevation gain and many stops to talk about geology as well as the plants and animal signs we encounter. We'll have an interactive post-hike lunch at nearby Alpine Pond. Keith Johnsgard, after leaving the university classrooms behind, Johnsgard moved to the mountains to re-embrace his boyhood passions. he has gradually reinvented himself as a naturalist, building a new library and walking daily along the ridges. And now, for nearly a decade, he has been leading moving outdoor classrooms as a mountain hike docent. His primary interests and specialties include ehthnobotany, Ohlone culture and history, earthquake geology, mammal tracking and mountain lion behavior.
